Angels and Demons May Face Vatican Boycott
There’s a great possibility that the Vatican will boycott the film Angels and Demons. According to Reuters, Vatican’s official newspaper ran a story on their Friday’s edition expressing that the Church “cannot approve” of such a problematic film.
The Turin daily, La Stampa, stated that the Vatican would soon call for a boycott of the film, though on the same article Archbishop Velasio De Paolis also warned that there might be a “boomerang effect” that could call attention to the film and eventually make it more popular, as is the case with the first film The Da Vinci Code.
A similar boycott happened in 2006 when The Da Vinci Code was released in theaters. However, the Dan Brown-novel-turned-into-film still became really successful in the box office, earning an estimated $760 million worldwide.
Many of the characters in The Da Vinci Code will still be in Angels and Demons but the latter takes place before the events portrayed in the earlier film. Angels and Demons‘ worldwide release is on May 15, 2009.
